Mini-braces

Mini orthodontic braces

Mini braces are special braces that are super-compact and uses very flexible wire. Unlike conventional braces, light orthodontic force can be delivered to the tooth.

Consequently, tooth moves faster because it is more physiological.

Advantages of Mini-braces

    1. Safer for weak and loose tooth- Mini braces use very thin and light wire. So orthodontic force is very light but effective. This mini braces are indicated as the 1st choice for patients with periodontitis.
    2. No lip irritation- Traditional silver (metal) or ceramic braces are bulky. Many adult patients complain of braces rubbing their lips. Mini- braces is so compact that it does not irritate lips or cheek.
    3. No discomfort when eating- Because back teeth bite is maintained, chewing is almost the same after placing the Mini braces.
    4. Easier to brush- For kids who can’t brush well, Mini braces doesn’t collect much plaque or tartar because it is too small. Self-cleansing is possible with saliva and lip activity.

But Mini braces are not suitable for everyone

Because the mini braces are so small and only very thin and light wire can be used, it may not be suitable for more complex cases. For instance, when back teeth need to move or for extraction case, conventional braces or clear aligners  will be a better option.

Silver braces

Silver (metal) braces

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces are indicated for patients who prefer more esthetic appearance of the braces.
Advantages: better appearance
Disadvantage: Slightly bulkier than silver braces- It may rub lips or check more easily.
Risk of minor damaging on the enamel surfaces- Because of this, ceramic braces are not indicated for young children whose enamel is not mature.

Your First Days in Braces
It is normal to experience some mild discomfort for the first few days after your braces are placed. Your
cheeks and tongue are becoming accustomed to the braces and your teeth are starting to move. An over the counter pain reliever such as Advil or Tylenol may be used to help alleviate some of this discomfort. Warm salt water rinses and a diet consisting of softer foods may also help during this time.
